Walking with trekking poles versus running or both?
Last year I took a break from running due to more frequent respiratory illnesses. However, I missed the physical activity.
But what to do about it?
In recent years, I've preferred cross-country skiing in the winter because it is a natural and versatile form of exercise. My husband used to go running in the winter months, and I admired that. However, mine would probably get "some of those colds" back in no time. When I was looking for an alternative to running, I discovered the magic of trekking poles—and my husband helped me try them out.
What are trekking poles?
Poles with a strap to attach to your hand, usually ending in spikes on which rubber "boots" can be put on, typically consist of two to three parts. They help engage the whole body when walking, which contributes to a more significant improvement in physical fitness than normal walking.
My husband and I had a moment together without the children, walking in the terrain of the Brda forests. I found that walking at a pace with trekking poles is similarly intense to cross-country skiing. You engage the muscles of your whole body and save your knees. And yet the movement is dynamic.
And if that's not enough, you can also run with the poles and it can be quite intense too. Just be careful, you need to follow the right technique so you don't trip on them, etc.
Are you interested in which way we went?
Our walk went first to Strážný vrch (Guard Hill), then to Řevnické quarry, then to a waterfall that revealed the color of the iron soil below. We got to it through a thicket of trees, but we descended right along the flow of the water. Nice places worth a little effort and overcoming obstacles.
Often we walked off the main roads, in the larger terrain. It slowly started to get dark and a beautiful sunset spread out in front of us. One of its colors struck me like hot lava. The climb in the rocky terrain was worth it.
By the time we got back to the fork where we parked, we were already continuing on the main road, again at pace. We walked a total of 6.5 km.
The experience of walking with trekking poles reminded me that movement is not just about exercise, it is also about being together and appreciating the beauty of nature.
