How the little dog came to his home
We who love dogs also love stories with them - especially with a happy ending.
How about this story, would you read it to your child?
There was a little dog wandering the streets, with no family, eating only what he could find, but enjoying every little thing. It was only when he saw another little dog with a family, how they took care of him, how they played with him, and how they showered him with love, that he felt very sad.
One dreary, cold day he was digging through the trash of an overturned garbage can when he suddenly became aware that someone was standing behind him, watching him. It was a man. It was a little boy. The little boy knelt down and held out his hand to the dog. He waited patiently. "What is the boy waiting for? What does he want from me?" thought the little dog. So he cautiously approached with his dirty snout to see what it was all about. He sniffed the boy's palm suspiciously. In a second, the boy grabbed him, and with the dog in his arms, he scampered quickly away. He tried his best to slip away, but he held him tightly to him. "Where are you dragging me? Let go of me, I'm too scared!" ran through the dog's head, and he did not interrupt his attempts to slip away and escape.
Just as he was giving up, the boy began to speak to him in a calm and soothing voice, "Don't be afraid, little one. I'll take care of you. I love you already and you'll be fine with me, I promise!" At these words, the little dog relaxed a little and stopped struggling, but he still didn't trust him very much.
The moment they reached their destination and the boy let go of the dog, he ran to the corner of the room and cowered against the wall in fear. There were two other people there, but they were bigger. He was sitting next to some two little bowls. One had water in it and the other had little brown bits that smelled delicious. He hesitated for a moment and then he tasted.
It took a while for him to learn to listen and recognize everything in the area, but after a while, the dog realized that the people probably actually liked him. That where he was could probably be his home, where he didn't miss anything, wasn't cold, and had lots of love. He didn't even remember his garbage can anymore.
